In the middle of any turn you can unleash your “Limit Break” if you have the power built up. This is super nice when your going all over the place for quests and fighting things constantly. First, since this is a remaster of the PSP version, you thankfully have the ability to speed up the game by pressing R2/RT. Overall, when taking into account the vast majority of normal battles where the grid system isn’t a factor and its more less a turn-based RPG, FFVII is a very apt comparison, mechanically.Ĭontrols are simple and typical of most JRPGs of the Playstation 2 era, with 2 caveats. You attach these orbs to a character slot and different combinations unlock different spells, which you can conveniently see every combination via the in-game “Manual” called the Bracer notebook. Mechanically, the game plays similar to Final Fantasy VII’s materia system, only in SkyFC they are called orbs. While mostly a traditional turn based game, the inclusion of a grid movement adds some strategy, such as moving out of dangerous spells or staying within ally range for the super broken Earth Wall. Each turn, each character has a single action – move/attack/cast or craft (abilities). The battles are turn based, but it operates on a strategy game grid arena. The battle system is a bit unique, especially for its initial release date in 2004. Gameplay (Controls/Mechanics/Loop/Difficulty/Bugs) – In SkyFC, when you’re not reading through endless dialogs, you do occasionally fight things, like in most JRPGs. Could probably finish this in half the time if you focused on the main story. Note that this was taking my time and doing every side quest. I clocked in a full run through at around 84 hours. Its charming watching these interactions play out. Every character has their own story, their strengths and weaknesses, their lore and history. The game does a wonderful job at setting the stage for SkySC. But trust me when I say you will not be disappointed. At times I felt like I was playing a visual novel. Everywhere you go, you can see how a large war from 10 years prior has affected each area. The lore here is strong and go hand-in-hand with the game world. Each town has a history, each region has its own story. The game world is built meticulously to harbor a story. Yes, just like how E&J are on a journey focused on their training, the player is on a journey to take in the world of SkyFC, learn the locales, the characters, and the lore. Content (Game world/Narrative/Lore/Length/P2W/Mods) – In The Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky (SkyFC (first chapter)…because TitS feels a bit wrong), you control Estelle and Joshua (E&J) as they make their way around the kingdom of Liberl in a journey to become full-fledged bracers, that is to say, a type of lawful good mercenary group.
